What peas is called on an ingredients panel
A label can avoid the word "peas" entirely and still contain it. These are the 7 names to scan for:
- pea protein
- pea fiber
- pea starch
- pea flour
- green peas
- split peas
- pea protein isolate
Highly refined fats derived from a protein contain very little protein, and protein drives the allergic response, so many animals tolerate them. Worth raising with your vet rather than assuming either way.
Confirming it
Suspecting an ingredient and confirming it are different things. Blood and saliva "food allergy tests" aren't reliable for this. The diagnostic standard is an eight-week elimination trial followed by a rechallenge: remove everything the animal has eaten before, wait for signs to settle, then reintroduce to see if they return.

Can my pet suddenly become allergic to peas?
